2009 BMW S1000RR

BMW Motorrad’s new president stunned the world when he officially announced a new ultra-sport literbike built to take on the established Japanese competitors both on the sales floor and the World Superbike Championship.

The new bike is dubbed the S1000RR, and it marks a bold new direction for the formerly staid German brand.

“We are confident that we will be able to start the Superbike World Championship next year with a convincing all-round package, and that our series motorcycle will be just as convincing,” said Hendrik von Kuenheim, a 20-year veteran of BMW and now the General Director of BMW’s motorcycle division. “In both terms of both its technology and price, our Supersports will be absolutely competitive.”

BMW has a long history of racing, though it’s been mostly in the realm of automobiles. They have the high-technology know-how, but it will be interesting to see how BMW can create a bike to be competitive on price and performance with the Japanese.

“BMW Motorrad is looking at a long-term involvement in this segment,” said BMW Motorrad’s head honcho. “Clearly, that means we must speak the language of the segment and follow the usual market standards. And, indeed, we are confident that we will set new benchmarks in this scene, winning over an appropriate market share.”

Although details of the S1000RR are still a little vague, we can tell you that it adopts the successful formula of an inline-Four engine with a target of 190 crankshaft horsepower.

“In the early project phase we checked out various engine concepts,” explained von Kuenheim. “The straight-Four (offers) the best qualities to meet the power, performance, weight, and package requirements to be fulfilled.”

The frame is a conventional perimeter layout made from aluminum. To ensure a light and compact layout, the S1000RR eschews any of BMW’s unique suspension designs, instead using an inverted fork up front and a chain-drive rear end with a banana-style swingarm working a single shock out back. BMW intends the finished bike’s wet weight to be 419 pounds.

“For package reasons we have decided against the BMW Duo-Lever on the suspension,” said von Kuenheim. “Taking up more space, this kind of front-wheel geometry would have presented disadvantages with the very compact structure of BMW’s new Superbike.”

The S1000RR will offer at least one feature the Japanese don’t: traction control. We expect all sorts of other techno-wizardry in this bike, including throttle-by-wire actuation and variable-length intake snorkels. Von Kuenheim also promises some innovative technology in the engine’s cylinder head.

“From the start we wish to be on par with our well-established competitors also in the Supersports segment,” von Kuenheim stated boldly. “It is our objective to offer the customer a high-performance motorcycle with absolutely outstanding qualities and features on both the road and race track in terms of rideability, performance, and ergonomics.”

BMW intends to enter World Superbike competition in 2009 with its S1000RR. It will build 1000 of the new literbikes by the end of 2009 to meet homologation requirements for this production-based class. BMW has already been developing the bike in conjunction with Alpha-Racing, a German tuning shop with plenty of motorsport experience. The team is currently looking to find riders for the bike. In the near future, BMW will begin production of the racebike in order to develop it for the 2009 race season.

BMW describes its progress with the development as “very promising.” The expected goals are to garner top-10 results in ’09, then to log podium positions in 2010.

But why would BMW want to venture into such a competitive category?

“The very fascination of this motorcycle with its racing DNA expands and upgrades the brand image of BMW Motorrad by offering an additional sporting and emotional element winning over new customers for the brand,” said von Kuenheim, noting that the class accounts for more than 100,000 units worldwide. “We are actively looking for new options, for profitable growth and for the planned increase in volume. Precisely that is why we have decided, among other things, to take on the competition in the Supersports segment on both the road and the race track.”

Together with BMW’s recent acquisition of Husqvarna, the German company has ambitions sales goals for the near future.

“This year we again plan to deliver more motorcycles to our customers than in the previous year,” said von Kuenheim. Considering that motorcycle markets show a rather irregular and inconsistent development, this is and remains a very demanding target.

As part of the strategic reorientation of the BMW Group, we have announced that customer deliveries by BMW Motorrad are to increase by approximately 50% by the year 2012 to 150,000 units. To meet this objective, we are making BMW Motorrad even more sporting and dynamic. This means that we are specifically entering market segments where BMW Motorrad was not represented so far.”

The challenge for BMW, and all European manufacturers, is the continued decline in value of the American dollar against the euro. Von Kuenheim notes that the dollar and Japanese yen have lost about 80% of their value versus the euro.

Intriguingly, BMW notes that the “S” in S1000RR stands for Supersports, what it describes as “a new class of motorcycles from BMW.” Note the plural. Rumors of a 675cc Triple might make that a reality.

Need a Florida Motorcycle Accident Lawyer and looking for an ethical, experienced and aggressive lawyer to figure out if you may be entitled to money compensation for your serious injury?

In Florida, motorcycle accidents happen mostly because automobile drivers do not share the road. I frequently represent seriously injured motorcycle riders because a car fails to see the motorcycle and then the car pulls out into the intersection. Another common reason is that the car driver changes lanes without looking. The most frequent injuries are fractures of shoulder or wrists from going over the handlebars, or femur (long bone of the leg) fractures from laying the bike down or a side impact. Unfortunately, even at slower speeds and with a helmet, I have represented the family of fathers and sons who have died in motorcycle crashes.

As a Florida Motorcycle accident lawyer, I understand that you may want to express you individuality and freedom on the road by making the decision as an adult not to wear a helmet. The insurance company in a brain injury case will argue that you are the cause of your own injury being worse because if you were wearing a helmet the injury would not have been so bad.

I retain experts in biomechanics, who are engineers and if the evidence is available and in your favor, they can calculate the force of the impact and tell the insurance company that they are wrong. That wearing a helmet would not have made a difference. A helmet sometimes can actually make the injury worse. I am not advocating that you should not wear a helmet , it's just that wearing one does not always make a difference. It depends on the accident circumstances. Each Florida Motorcycle Accident claim will get my personal attention to detail and my 30 years of experience.

If you would like to consult for free with a Florida civil trial lawyer who is board certified as an expert in civil trial then please call 888-446-1999

BMW Motorrad has unveiled a bold new concept bike at the EICMA show in Milan which they call a study in design and engineering. Using the words purist and powerful to describe the concept, BMW has left nothing but the essentials present in a truly naked motorcycle.

One of the goals of this concept is to custom fit man and machine. Going well beyond chrome billet accessories, the Lo Rider will offer the rider a choice of most components other than engine and chassis. Each bike will offer a unique version of bespoke individuality. These options allow for a multitude of options which allow customers to build it into a pseudo cruiser or a naked Sportster. “Numerous options including different exhaust systems, seats, headlamp units and paint finish variations allow for a level of customization which is far greater than the familiar individualization by means of special equipment features and accessories,” says a BMW press release. “This means that the entire character of the vehicle can be adapted to the customer’s individual taste: the customer can take full pleasure in assembling a machine just as he wants it – from a cool cruiser to an aggressive muscle bike.”

Our European correspondent at the show, Yossef Schvetz, who greatly disliked the bike commented that, “The low weight, powerful flat-Twin engine and high-quality chassis technology give it a high level of sporty riding dynamics, while the lowered chassis and the relaxed yet active seating position with the broad handlebars are more of a loan from cruisers and naked bikes.” Essentially it looks like BMW is attempting to build a bike that offers something for everyone.

The response for the bike will likely decide whether the project gets scrapped or manages to once again see the light of day. Such an aggressive bike will undoubtedly elicit powerful visceral responses one way or another. The Lo Rider, which represents a significant paradigm shift for BMW, would create an entirely new market while restoring the passion and excitement that has been missing from BMW street bikes over the last few years. I say build it!

BMW placed the F800R as an entry-level, sporty, naked urban machine to slot in amongst myriad of 600cc middleweight bikes eg Yamaha FZ6, Triumph Street Triple, Honda Hornet and so on – even though its engine is 798cc! And we can cheerfully say it fits in. What the BMW conveys is the feel and ride of large capacity bike with a parallel twin engine that can be revved to give the excitement of a sports bike without intimidating anyone.

Engine
The 798cc twin lump delivers a sweet mixture of low rpm torque and accessible horsepower. The harder you work it the more the body produces adrenaline. Fuelling is perfect around town and will return a very pleasing 54mpg even when ragged on back roads. But with this excitement, from 5000rpm and on, comes niggling vibrations though the bars and pegs. You get used to this.

Ride and Handling
The feel of the BMW F800R is taut and precise. The chassis is stiff and the suspension has been developed to work in conjunction with the chassis. Under braking and through the turn the bike is settled and feels compact, solid and… great. The rear shock is a little soft for pillion use but adjustments made (spring preload, damping) actually work. Goodly amount of steering lock and low-ish seat height make the F800R a good traffic-buster.

Equipment
To keep the cost down (at £5925 it is relatively cheap for a fun-time BMW) the F800R is as basic as its competitors, suspension and stunning front brakes aside. But if you’ve got the money to spare there’s a ruck of optional extras and accessories available from onboard computer, tyre pressure monitor, ABS, higher/lower seat option (FOC), fly screen, belly pan, panniers etc, etc.

Quality and Reliability
One of the best put together BMW bikes we’ve seen. Everything fits perfectly and the coatings, paint and parts are sweet. But there again most bikes are like this from new. We all assume BMW has a reputation for quality, but there have been a few more complaints over the past 3-4 years, which BMW said it will address. On the plus side the engine is a known quantity because it figures in four other models and is well sorted now.

Value
Very, very competitively priced to start with and there’s the benefit of BMW machines retaining high resale figures even with high mileage, but only if the service record is up to date.

BMW's new F800GS is virtually unique: a 750/800 class adventure bike, that to most degrees offers the best of both worlds. It’s light, slim and perky enough to be a credible off-roader yet it’s also substantial, grunty, roomy and potentially sufficiently well equipped to tackle crossing continents. It’s also got a price that’s hugely tempting too.

Engine
Derived from the F800S unit, but with a more upright block, the BM parallel twin is intoxicatingly invigorating. 85 horses might not sound like much, but its more than enough. It’s perky and fruity, has a deliciously raspy exhaust note and is responsive, progressive and yet yearns for more and more revs up to the redline. Wring its neck and duck yours behind the reasonable screen and you’ll see 125mph, which is more than ample, thankyou. The rest of time it just delivers what and when you want it.

Ride and Handling
Unlike the 1200GS the 800’s no monster. Though tall and ‘proper’ the 800GS is lithe, slim and light, enough to both remind of conventional, single cylinder enduros, from, say KTM, and to make it a doddle, at least compared to the 1200, to manhandle and manouvere, thanks to masses of steering lock, decent suspension, lightness and assured weight distribution.

Equipment
Being a BMW the F800GS's fairly basic standard but with the usual myriad of accessories and factory fitted options available. Different seats, screens and bars are available; as are the usual sophisticated luggage systems plus creature comforts like sat nav, heated grips and the like

Quality and Reliability
BMW rules again. Although there have been occasional hiccups in recent years, there should be little to worry about with the new F800GS. The F800S/ST upon which it’s based has proved mechanically reliable and solid and the engineering is proven. Unusually, for a BMW though, you’ll have to maintain a drivechain.

Value
At £6999 the price is possibly the new GS’s biggest trump card of all. That represents fabulous value compared to the £2000 dearer 1200 version and there really is nothing else close to it in terms of all round ability. But if you want better value still, got for the in many ways identical £5495 F650GS

There will be no charge for lawyer fees of representation or costs of representation if there is not money compensation recovery.
