Engine: 201 Hp, Pure Power
The new 4-cylinder short stroke engine with radial valve is the soul of the MV Agusta F4 RR. The engine is completely new and is inspired by MV Agusta’s experience in competition. Apart from the engine case castings, the arrangement of cylinders and a few other elements the 4 cylinder RR engine shares little with that of the previous F4. It has been completely redesigned with a single goal in mind: maximum performance. All new thermodynamics, a new crankshaft that has a reduced value of inertia and new bore and stroke dimensions with an extremely over-square relationship that can reach rpm’s worthy of a true racing motorcycle. The piston diameter has been increased from 76 to 79 mm while the stroke is reduced from 55 mm to 50.9 mm. With these dimensions the rpm limit has been raised to a stratospheric 13,700 rpm while at the same time reducing the linear velocity of the piston (from 24.7 m/s to 22.9 m/s) and thus also improving reliability.

To reach the stratospheric level of 201 hp at 13,400 rpm with a completely homologated engine including an exhaust system complete with the catalytic converter, extreme attention has been given to every detail. The thermodynamic efficiency has been optimized to guarantee a record level of performance. For this reason, the head of the F4 RR is completely new including new intake and exhaust tracts as well as large diameter intake and exhaust valves. For the first time on an MV mass production engine, all the valves are made of titanium and this has made it possible to reduce the mass while at the same time significantly increasing the diameter (30 to 31.8 mm for the inlet and from 25 to 26 mm for the exhaust). The tuning of the engine has been optimized thanks to the use of a completely new 4-2-1-4 exhaust system with large diameter tapered headers. In addition to ensuring the optimized performance of the engine, this new exhaust system has a unique sound and is even more intoxicating.

The intake is controlled by four 49 mm throttle bodies with the unique TSS system of variable length intake tracts.

The new engine of the F4 RR has been designed according to the criterion of low friction. A new primary drive gear has drastically reduced the speed of the generator and water pump in effect limiting the parasitic power consumption of these components. As with previous F4’s, this new engine features a rapidly removable cassette gearbox and the clutch employs a mechanical slipper system to assure proper control even under the most extreme braking conditions. The electronic engine management has been further refined compared to that of the previous F4. The traction control follows new operating modes as well as two maps for the engine, and everything is now easily managed through the new controls that have been placed on the left handlebar.

Chassis: Light and Precise
The frame and swingarm are common with those of the already excellent F4, but the desire on the part of MV Agusta to offer a four-cylinder superbike has also led to the employment of some unique solutions. To optimize performance and adapt the F4 RR to all race tracks and conditions, the MV Agusta F4 RR allows a virtually infinite combination of adjustments. Multi-adjustable suspension, essential for a racing motorcycle, has been combined with the adjustable steering head angle (with interchangeable eccentrics) and the height of the swing arm pivot and rear axle by means of calibrated inserts.

Suspension: The Best of The Best
The Öhlins NIX upside-down front fork has 43 mm diameter inner tube and a titanium nitride coating to improve the smoothness and precision. This particular fork dimension has been designed to achieve the perfect balance of agility without sacrificing the legendary stability of an MV. As the most sophisticated motorcycles, the front wheel axle carriers are machined from billet aluminum and the front forks offer precise external adjustment of spring preload as well as compression and rebound damping. Also, the fork of the MV Agusta F4 RR provides separate adjustments for the hydraulic damping (left leg compression, right leg extension), a solution that enables the accuracy of the hydraulic independence as varying the compression does not have an influence on the rebound. The Öhlins Racing TTX 36 rear shock is simply the best in the world. Born from experience in competition, it is externally adjustable in spring preload, compression, rebound and length allowing you to vary the ride height of the rear of the bike to match the different driving styles and different circuits. In addition, the MV Agusta F4 RR also offers the possibility of adjusting the height of the swing arm pivot point by means of calibrated inserts.

Rims
The quest for lighter weight and the best possible handling led to the creation of lightweight forged aluminum wheels that minimize un-sprung weight and reduced inertia with the advantage in the increased reactivity of the bike. The new wheels on the MV Agusta F4 RR allow a weight saving of 1 kg compared to the standard F4 cast versions.

Brakes
The F4, the current reference in high performance braking, has only been exceeded by the new F4 RR. The Brembo monobloc calipers are the state of the art high performance brake calipers for motorcycles, and now, paired with Brembo radial master cylinders, the braking performance is on par with that of the top superbikes. The clutch master cylinder is the mirror image of the radial brake caliper which offers increased feel and modulation. Numerous other exclusive details, such as the levers and handlebars which are dedicated specifically to the MV F4 RR and subject to countless hours of testing and development all lead to the best possible ergonomics available on a production motorcycle.

Components
A true superbike is not only defined by its potential performance, but also by the attention to detail with which it is made. F4 RR, the details speak for themselves. Never before has a race-ready superbike been built with such a high level of attention to detail. The design features are not only created to be visually pleasing, but, as form follows function and the F4RR has been designed to perform. For this reason, every detail has been considered to increase performance and functionality, reduce weight and increase the product quality fit and finish. The F4 RR debuts new adjustable light weight rear sets to match the ergonomics of the bike to the needs of the pilot. The remote control of the dashboard functions (including traction control) is just one of the details that the MV engineers have put into this new superbike. In addition, a new aerodynamic flap has been added under the lower triple clap to convey additional air to the radiator optimizing the aerodynamics and cooling of the engine’s record power.

MV SPECIAL PARTS TO PERSONALIZE YOUR MASTERPIECE

Exclusive technology and design has been imprinted into the DNA of the new F4 RR. It is the world's most powerful superbike. But, the evolution never ends. You can make your F4 RR even more unique with the original MV special parts that have been developed to provide you with additional performance using the very latest technical advancements in materials and design.

MV special parts are an absolute guarantee of quality for the customer as they have been subject to the same high standards of quality that have been applied to the original masterpiece using the most advanced materials such as aerospace alloy, titanium and carbon fiber. Special exhausts systems and racing engine ECU’s have also been developed that can increase even further the record power level of the 4 cylinder engine.

2012 MV Agusta F4R

Beauty and power without compromise. - THE MV AGUSTA F4 R CORSA CORTA HAS ARRIVED

The new MV Agusta F4 R 2012 has been designed to offer clients a superbike with extreme performance. The key feature of the F4 R is, in fact, the new “Corsa Corta” engine capable of extraordinary performance and already employed on the F4 RR, the top of the MV Agusta superbike range.

2012 MV Agusta F4R Review

The new 4 cylinder inline with radial valves is the pulsing heart of the MV Agusta F4 R. The thermodynamics have been completely redesigned, starting from the new low inertia crankshaft which makes it possible to use a super over-square bore and stroke ratio. In this way, the MV F4 R is capable of reaching rpm worthy of a pure racing motorcycle. The engine capacity of 998cc has been obtained by using a bore of 79 mm and a stroke of only 50.9 mm. In this way it is possible to achieve an extremely high 13700 rpm rev limit while at the same time lowering the linear velocity of the piston from 24.9 m/s to 23 m/s improving reliability.

In order to reach the stratospheric homologated power of 195.2 hp (against the 201 hp of the super powerful RR version) at 13000 rpm, every component was thoroughly engineered. The cylinder head uses completely new ports and employs larger valves both on the inlet and exhaust. For the first time on a mass production motorcycle, all the valves are made of titanium, allowing the weight of these to be reduced regardless of the increase in diameter (from 28.6 to 31.8 mm for exhaust and from 24.6 to 26 mm for the exhaust). The engine “breathes” in a more efficient way thanks to the use of a new 4-2-1-4 primary section of the exhaust system. In addition to assuring optimized engine efficiency, this new exhaust system offers an absolutely unique sound that is even more captivating then in previous versions. The fuel system employs 4 throttle bodies with a 49mm diameter and double fuel injectors per cylinder coupled with the unique MV Agusta TSS (Torque Shift System) variable intake runners.

The new F4 R, already on sale at official dealers, is available in 2 colours: red/grey and white/medium grey, at a price of 18,800 € including tax in Italy

2012 MV Agusta F4R Features and Benefits

The new engine of the MV Agusta F4 R was designed with the scope of reducing the internal friction to a minimum: the transmission’s new primary gear ratio allowed a drastic reduction in rpm of both generator and water pump, thereby limiting the absorbed power. This extraordinary engine utilizes the unique features that have become trademarks to MV Agusta including a removable 6-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch which assures precise control even during the most violent braking manoeuvres. The electronic management system has been continuously evolved, the traction control employs a new algorithm and maintains the two rider selectable engine maps, all of which are now comfortably adjustable by means of the new control situated on the left handlebar.

The new MV Agusta F4 R remains, naturally, faithful to the structural tradition of mixing a steel tubular trellis to cast aluminium side-plates. The steering head angle is set at 23.5°, perfect for providing control, manoeuvrability, and stability. Also confirmed is the exceptional rear single-sided swingarm, a real engineering jewel that weighs only 5 kg, a record for this type of element.

The MV F4 R retains its notoriety for excellence in the area of suspension. The Marzocchi upside down forks, with 50 mm stanchions, is derived directly from the units used in competition, they are adjustable in spring preload as well as the hydraulic extension and compression. The forged ultra-light front axle carrier is also especially made for the F4 R and uses a rapid release system for the wheel, reminiscent of the first F4, the legendary Serie Oro that adopted this same technical solution. The rear Sachs shock absorber is equipped with a nitrogen reservoir (separated and integrated within the body) and is adjustable in extension, compression and spring preload. The shock linkage allows the ride height to be adjusted depending on the desired setup, rider preferences to further tune the bike to specific riding conditions and tracks.

The Brembo front brake system, with “monoblock” radial calipers is, without a doubt, the best system for motorcycles currently on the market, coupled to a master cylinder with integrated reservoir made specifically to demanding MV specifications.

The 320 mm diameter floating double front discs use an ultra light flange which are 5 mm thick to reduce inertia forces and non suspended masses. The rear brake system is made exclusively for MV with a stainless steel 220 mm diameter disc and 4 piston calliper.

2013 Kawasaki ZX-10R Review

Kawasaki has developed a new electronic steering damper for the 2013 ZX-10R sportbike, in joint cooperation with Öhlins. Controlled by a dedicated ECU located under the gas tank cover, this new damper reacts to the rate of acceleration or deceleration, as well as rear wheel speed, to help provide the ideal level of damping force across a wide range of riding scenarios. The variable damping provides optimum rider feedback by enabling the use of lower damping forces during normal operation, without sacrificing the firm damping needed for high-speed stability. The result is a light and nimble steering feel at low speed, as well as superior damping at higher speeds or during extreme acceleration/deceleration. The anodized damper unit incorporates Öhlins’ patented twin-tube design to help ensure stable damping performance and superior kickback absorption. It is mounted horizontally at the front of the fuel tank and requires very few additional components and ads almost no weight compared to last year’s steering damper.

The highly advanced and customizable Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control (S-KTRC) lets riders harness and capitalize on the ZX-10R’s amazing blend of power and responsive handling. Exclusive to the ZX-10R, S-KTRC offers a level of performance that raises the ZX above the rest of the open sport bike class.

Motorcyclists have long been challenged by traction-related issues and riders who can keep a rear tire from spinning excessively or sliding unpredictably are both faster and safer, a tough combination to beat on the racetrack. And when talking about the absolute leading edge of open-class sport bike technology, where production street bikes are actually more capable than full-on race bikes from just a couple years ago, more consistent traction and enhanced confidence is a major plus.

The MotoGP-derived S-KTRC system works by crunching numbers from a variety of parameters and sensors – wheel speed and slip, engine rpm, throttle position, acceleration, etc. There’s more data gathering and analysis going on here than on any other Kawasaki in history, and it’s all in the name of helping racers inch closer to the elusive “edge” of maximum traction than ever before. The S-KTRC system relies on complex software buried in the ZX-10R’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU); the only additional hardware is the lightweight speed sensors located on each wheel.

Unlike the KTRC system on Kawasaki’s Concours™ 14 ABS sport tourer, which primarily minimizes wheel slip on slick or broken surfaces as a safety feature, the S-KTRC system is designed to maximize performance by using complex analysis to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable. By quickly but subtly reducing power just before the amount of slippage exceeds the optimal traction zone, the system – which processes every data point 200 times per second – maintains the optimum level of tire grip to maximize forward motion. The result is significantly better lap times and enhanced rider confidence – exactly what one needs when piloting a machine of this caliber.

The S-KTRC system offers three different modes of operation, which riders can select according to surface conditions, rider preference and skill level: Level 1 for max-grip track use, Level 2 for intermediate use, and Level 3 for slippery conditions. An LCD graph on the instrument cluster displays how much electronic intervention is occurring in real time and a thumb switch on the left handlebar pod allows simple, on-the-go mode changes.

The system also incorporates an advanced Power Mode system that allows riders to choose the amount of power – and the character of delivery – available from the engine. Besides the standard Full-power mode are Medium and Low settings. In Medium mode, performance varies according to throttle position and engine rpm; at anything less than 50 percent throttle opening, performance is essentially the same as in Low mode; at more than 50 percent, riders can access additional engine performance. All three S-KTRC settings are available in each of the three Power Mode settings.

The potent ZX-10R engine is a 16-valve, DOHC, liquid-cooled inline-four displacing 998cc via 76 x 55mm bore and stroke dimensions. This powerplant is designed to optimize center of gravity and actual engine placement within the chassis. It has been fine-tuned to help eliminate the power peaks and valleys that make it difficult for racers and track-day riders to open the throttle with confidence. A primary goal of Kawasaki engineers was linear power delivery and engine manageability throughout all elements of a corner: the entry, getting back to neutral throttle at mid-corner, and heady, controllable acceleration at the exit.

Large intake valves complemented by wide, polished intake ports allow for controllable power delivery and engine braking, just the thing to smooth those racetrack corner entries and exits. Camshafts built from chromoly steel further contribute to optimized engine braking and more controllable power delivery. Lightweight pistons mount to light and strong connecting rods. Compression is a full 13.0:1.

A secondary engine balancer assembly allows a number of vibration-damping parts to be simplified, contributing to weight savings. Also contributing to weight savings are a light battery, ECU and fuel pump.
A race-style cassette transmission allows simple trackside ratio changes. An adjustable back-torque limiting clutch assembly is fitted, which allows worry-free downshifts and corner-entry calmness.

Cramming all that fuel and air into this amazing engine is a ram air-assisted fuel injection system featuring large throttle bodies (47mm) and sub-throttle valves, a large capacity airbox (9 liters), secondary injectors that improve top-end power characteristics, and a large ram-air intake that’s positioned close to the front of the bike for efficient airbox filling and power.

The final piece of the ZX-10R’s power-production formula is a race-spec exhaust system featuring a titanium header assembly, hydroformed collectors, a large-volume pre-chamber containing two catalyzers and a highly compact silencer. Due to the header’s race-spec design, riders and racers looking for more closed-course performance need only replace the slip-on muffler assembly.

With the engine producing a massive quantity of usable and controllable power, engineers looked to the chassis to help refine handling and overall road/track competency. The aluminum twin-spar frame is an all-cast assembly of just seven pieces that features optimized flex characteristics for ideal rider feedback, cornering performance and light weight. Like the frame, the alloy swingarm is an all-cast assembly, with rigidity matching that of the frame itself.

Chassis geometry offers excellent stability and handling quickness. The front end geometry – with rake at 25 degrees and trail at 107mm (4.21 in.) – allows light, quick handling and complements the engine’s controllable power and the frame and swingarm’s flex characteristics.

Highly advanced suspension at both ends helps as well. Up front is a 43mm open-class version of the Big Piston Fork (BPF). Featuring a piston design nearly twice the size of a conventional cartridge fork, the BPF offers smooth action, less stiction, light weight and enhanced damping performance on the compression and rebound circuits. This compliance results in more control and feedback for the rider – just what you need when carving through a rippled sweeper at your local track or negotiating a decreasing-radius corner on your favorite backroad.

Suspension duties on the ZX-10R are handled by a Horizontal Back-Link design that positions the shock and linkage above the swingarm. Benefits include mass centralization, good road holding, compliance and stability, smooth action in the mid-stroke and good overall feedback. The fully adjustable shock features a piggyback reservoir and dual-range (low- and high-speed) compression damping.

Lightweight gravity-cast three-spoke wheels complement the tire fitment. Up front, Tokico radial-mount calipers grasp 310mm petal discs and a 220mm disc is squeezed by a lightweight single-piston caliper in back. The result is powerful, responsive braking for plenty of rider feedback.

Finally, Kawasaki engineers wrapped all this technology in bodywork as advanced and stylish as anything on this side of a MotoGP grid. The curvy edges and contrasting colored and black parts create a sharp, aggressive image. Line-beam headlights grace the fairing while LED turn signals are integrated into the mirror assemblies. Convenient turn-signal couplers allow easy mirror removal for track-day use. The rear fender assembly holding the rear signal stalks and license plate frame is also easily removable for track days. High-visibility LED lamps are also used for the taillight and position marker.

The instrumentation is highlighted by an LED-backlit bar-graph tachometer set above a multi-featured LCD info screen with numerous sections and data panels. A wide range of information is presented, including vehicle speed, odometer, dual trip meters, fuel consumption, Power Mode and S-KTRC level, low fuel, water temperature and much more. For track use, the LCD display can be set to “race” mode which moves the gear display to the center of the screen.

The ZX-10R’s ergonomics are designed for optimum comfort and control. A 32-inch saddle, adjustable footpegs and clip-ons mean that this is a hard-core sport bike you can actually take on an extended sport ride – and still be reasonably comfortable doing so.

The old saying, “power is nothing without control,” is certainly apt where open-class sport bikes are concerned. But when you factor in all the engine, chassis and ergonomic control designed into the 2013 Ninja ZX-10R, you begin to realize you’re looking at one very special motorcycle.

• Specially tuned for the 2013 ZX-10R, this new electronic damper helps provide the ideal amount of damping force across a wide range of riding scenarios
• Maintains a high level of rider feedback by allowing lower damping forces under less taxing conditions, but quickly adapts to increase damping and enhance high-speed stability when required
• Reacts to current speed as well as rate of acceleration or deceleration to help provide light steering feel at low speed, as well as superior damping at higher speeds or during extreme acceleration/deceleration
• Uses Öhlins’ patented twin-tube design to help ensure stable damping performance and superior kickback absorption

Liquid-cooled, DOHC, 998cc, Inline-four Engine

• Design is compact, narrow and lightweight
• Camshafts, crankshaft and pistons designed to complement the engine’s prodigious power production
• Large intake valves, camshaft profiles and port shapes help maximize power production and smooth power delivery
• Chromoly camshafts enhance durability
• Single-shaft secondary balancer helps reduce vibration; its use allows several vibration-damping parts to be simplified and lightened
• Strong connecting rods suit the power potential of this engine
• ECU is small enough to be tucked away in a slot in the airbox assembly
• One-piece upper crankcase and cylinder casting offers maximum rigidity
• Low-friction oil pump reduces parasitic power loss
• A lightweight radiator with tightly packed cores provides efficient engine cooling
• A liquid-cooled aluminum oil cooler promotes high-efficiency heat dissipation
• Intake and exhaust valves are titanium to reduce reciprocating weight and stress at high rpm

Dual-injector Digital Fuel Injection

• Large 47mm throttle bodies help with throttle control
• Secondary fuel injectors enhance power output and power characteristics at high rpm; the lower injectors are always on, while upper injectors come on as needed according to degree of throttle opening and engine rpm
• Oval-shaped throttle bodies allow precise throttle control and instant response
• An Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve on the throttle body unit automatically adjusts idle speed, contributing to easier starts and off-idle throttle response

Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control – S-KTRC

• A highly sophisticated electronic system based on actual Kawasaki racing experience that’s designed to maximize forward motion by allowing racers to ride closer to the edge of traction
• The system crunches a wide range of data, including throttle position, wheel speed, engine rpm, wheel slippage and acceleration, with help from a speed sensor fitted to each wheel
• The quickest acceleration requires a certain amount of wheel slippage, so to optimize traction, S-KTRC actually allows for optimum wheelspin
• Using complex analysis, the system is able to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable. By acting before slippage exceeds the range for optimal traction, the system can quickly and smoothly reduce power slightly so the wheel regains traction
• S-KTRC confirms conditions 200 times per second and governs ignition, which allows extremely quick response to changing conditions
• Riders can choose between three operational modes, depending on skill level and conditions
• A level meter on the LCD instrument panel displays how much electronic intervention the system is providing, in real time

Ram-air Intake

• A highly efficient and forward-positioned ram air intake is designed for low intake noise and good intake efficiency
• 9-liter airbox enhances breathing and power
• Oval-section intake funnels promote non-turbulent flow at all rpm

Titanium Exhaust System

• Titanium-header exhaust system with hydroformed header pipes and small, lightweight muffler assembly uses a pre-chamber that houses two catalyzers for emissions and sound
• Headers have nearly identical specs to their roadracing counterparts, which makes it easier for riders to increase track performance with the simple addition of a less-restrictive muffler; now there’s no need to replace the lightweight and race-spec header assembly
• Dual catalyzers help the ZX-10R meet strict U.S. and Euro III exhaust emissions standards

Six-speed Transmission

• Race-style cassette transmission allows simple trackside gearing changes to suit individual circuits
• The “cassette” is located high enough that it can be accessed without having to drain engine oil
• Primary and final reduction ratios minimize rear end movement (squat/lift) during acceleration and deceleration
• Close-ratio 4th, 5th and 6th gears complement the ZX-10R’s circuit performance
• Overall gear ratios suit the power characteristics for ideal power delivery in all rpm ranges
• An adjustable back-torque limiting clutch facilitates smooth downshifts, a main contributor to stability under heavy braking

Chassis / Frame

• Aluminum-alloy frame offers optimal flex and rigidity characteristics for balanced handling on street or track
• Chassis geometry allows sharp steering characteristics and crisp handling with no corresponding tradeoff in chassis stability at speed
• Frame is an all-cast construction of only seven pieces, with ideal wall thicknesses that provide adequate strength and optimized rigidity
• Front end weight aids aggressive, on-the-gas corner exits
• Modifying or removing the exhaust pre-chamber (for racetrack applications only) enables two chain links to be removed, which offers riders the opportunity to alter chassis geometry by shortening the wheelbase by up to 16mm to suit different track layouts
• Like the frame, the alloy swingarm is an all-cast design, with just three pieces
• Narrow subframe layout contributes to the compact and slim tail section

Horizontal Back-link Rear Suspension

• Shock and linkage are positioned above the swingarm
• The design offers excellent road-holding, smooth suspension action, and stability and feedback when cornering
• The design positions the shock’s upper link to spread out the load and contribute to enhanced overall frame rigidity and chassis balance
• The fully adjustable shock features a piggyback reservoir and dual (high
• and low-speed) compression damping, which enables fine tuning for racing or track-day use
• The Big Piston Fork (BPF) and Back-link suspension system contribute to rider control and faster lap times

Big Piston Fork (BPF)

• The Big Piston Fork’s (BPF) 43mm inner tubes is one of the contributing factors to the bike’s composure under braking
• Compared to a cartridge-type fork of the same size, the BPF features a 39.6mm main piston
• Oil inside the BPF acts on a surface area almost four times the size of a conventional fork’s. The larger surface area allows damping pressure to be reduced while ensuring that damping force remains the same
• Reducing damping pressure allows the inner fork tube to move more smoothly, which is especially noticeable at the initial part of the stroke. The result is greater control as the fork compresses and very calm attitude change as vehicle weight shifts forward under braking, and contributing to greater chassis stability on corner entry
• Because the BPF eliminates many of the internal components of a traditional cartridge fork, construction is simplified and overall fork weight is reduced
• Compression and rebound damping adjustments are located at the top of each fork tube, while preload is now at the bottom

Race-spec Steering Damper

• An adjustable twin-tube Öhlins steering damper is standard. The second tube acts like a reservoir, allowing the internals to ensure stable damping and excellent feedback even under racing conditions

Advanced Braking System

• Tokico radial-mount brake calipers use dual pads and offer a superb initial bite, increased control, progressive feel and a high degree of feedback to the rider
• A radial-pump front master cylinder provides the ultimate in front brake feel and feedback
• A pair of 5.5mm thick, 310mm petal discs provides the heat dissipation needed to maintain brake feel and responsiveness during extended heavy use
• A 220mm rear petal disc gripped by a single-piston caliper provides excellent feel and feedback

Three-spoke Cast Aluminum Wheels

• Gravity-cast alloy wheels feature a three-spoke design
• Light wheels mean low unsprung weight, which allows the suspension system to work more efficiently

Ergonomics

• 32-inch seat height makes it easy to reach the ground
• Fuel tank shape offers a comfortable ergonomic fit with the rider’s forearms and inner thighs when riding
• Adjustable foot pegs can be lowered an additional 15mm when street riding or touring

Advanced Aerodynamic Bodywork

• Compact, curved shape
• Large ducting aids engine heat dissipation
• Line-beam headlights and short fairing contributes to the aggressive styling
• LED three-bulb position lamp at the top of the ram air duct offers enhanced visibility to drivers and pedestrians
• Fairing-mounted mirrors feature integrated, LED-type turn signals
• Turn signals are electrically connected via couplers, which allows easy mirror removal for track day riding
• Compact tail section includes an elegant, nine-bulb taillight
• Taillight and turn signal stalks are mounted on a rear fender assembly that’s easily removable for track day riding

Advanced Electronic Instrumentation

• Instruments feature a high-visibility bar-graph LED tachometer positioned above a multi-window LCD info panel that offers riders a massive quantity of information
• The tachometer also functions as a shift indicator: LEDs flash when the pre-set rpm is reached, and riders can set shift rpm according to preference
• The multi-function LCD features two display modes: Standard and Race. Switching to Race Mode alters the Speed display by changing it to Gear Position, and by changing the Clock display to Speed
• Additional functions include odometer, dual trip meters, average fuel consumption, instant fuel consumption, Power Mode (x3), S-KTRC (x4), S-KTRC level indicator, low fuel indicator, Economical Riding indicator (shows most favorable fuel consumption), water temperature and a host of indicator lamps

2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R Review

Superlative Performance: the Quickest and Strongest Sportbike in the World!

The massively more powerful, R-designated, Ninja® ZX™-14R made its debut last year as an almost entirely new motorcycle. It remains on-top for 2013, reigning as the undisputed king of the sportbike world. New optional ABS brakes complement its amazing comfort and usability on the street, and help increase its appeal to a wide range of riders. It has to be tough competing against a machine like the ZX-14R, year after year, and continuous refinements have kept it several steps ahead of the sportbike competition, all while filling enthusiasts’ face shields with wild, ear-to-ear grins.

The ZX-14R packs a 1,441cc inline-four that produces significantly more power than any other production sportbike on the planet! Big power delivered smoothly has always been a big Ninja hallmark, so surface-milled combustion chamber shapes and polished intake ports provide maximum flow while working in concert the rest of the induction system. This ultimate Ninja really does come “ported” straight from the factory.

High-lift camshafts are operated by a high-performance cam chain and tensioner system to help ensure high-rpm reliability. Lightweight forged pistons also help durability and are cooled by an oil-jet cooling system that pumps a continuous stream of lubricant at the underside of each piston. (Testing shows the engine runs considerably cooler with this race-spec system.) The impressive durability built into this high-compression powerhouse continues with its super-strong alloy connecting rods have beefy small ends; it also uses thick 40mm crankshaft main journals; and its transmission gears are heat- and surface-treated for smooth shifting and a long service life.

Feeding this class dominating engine is a large, high-flow, air-cleaner element that helps prevent debris ingestion without restricting performance, and a Digital Fuel Injection (DFI®) system that offers automatic idle adjustment and helps reduce emissions. Exhaust exits through a high-performance system with large-diameter tapered header pipes and large-volume mufflers, each with an advanced catalyzer to minimize emissions.

The benefits of all this hot-rodding are substantial, as there’s class leading power virtually everywhere across the rev range. The advantages are most profound in the mid-high rpm range, but incredible acceleration is still available from as low as 4,000 rpm. This translates into the sort of thrust riders can appreciate in a wide variety of situations, whether it’s powering up a freeway on-ramp to merge with fast-moving traffic or cruising along a deserted backroad on a sunny, Sunday-morning ride. On the ZX-14R, total domination is just a twist of the throttle away.
The Ninja ZX-14R’s engine is more than supremely powerful; there’s also plenty of polish and refined manners to go along with it. The engine’s dual gear-driven counterbalancer setup has been optimized to work with the mill’s heavy-duty crankshaft and long-stroke dimensions. The end result is smooth power across the entire rev range.

Beyond just being impressively strong, the engine’s manners are also effectively managed by a combination of its back-torque limiting “slipper” clutch assembly, a three-mode KTRC traction control system and a two-mode Hi/Low power selector system. The first two KTRC modes are intended to maximize acceleration similar to the ZX-10R’s S-KTRC, the third mode is tuned for low-traction (wet/slippery) conditions, similar to the Concours 14’s KTRC. The KTRC system can be turned-off by the rider and its settings and the Hi/Low ignition maps can be selected with the bar-mounted toggle/push switch. KTRC activity can be monitored on a seven-segment real-time bar graph in the cockpit’s LCD info-screen. The back-torque limiting clutch technology comes directly from the racetrack, and helps eliminate the wheel-hop and stability-eroding torque effects of energetic downshifting and braking while cornering, or during spirited – or emergency – stops. It also helps protect the bike’s drive train, for optimum durability.

The result of all this refined and high-tech hot rodding is arguably the finest open-class sportbike engine ever built – and an engine this capable needs a similarly competent chassis in which to live and thrive. The ZX-14R is up to the job, and then some. Kawasaki engineers designed its chassis to deliver a light-handling and maneuverable personality. To provide a sweet-handling character coupled with real sport riding performance, the engineers designed the frame’s aluminum castings and forgings to have unique flex and rigidity characteristics. So while its monocoque alloy frame and aluminum swingarm designs look similar to the original ZX-14, they have vastly different flex characteristics, stiffer in some places and unchanged in others. The net result creates an ideal balance for the ZX-14R’s world class power and acceleration capabilities.

Front and rear suspension tuning helps maintain the balancing act of wheel control, ride compliance and maneuverability. Both the 43mm fully adjustable inverted fork and multi-adjustable single shock offer excellent response throughout a wide speed range, while the beautifully machined 10-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight to aid acceleration, handling and suspension action.

The powerful triple petal-type disc brakes help provide powerful, fade-free stops and a progressive feel at the lever. For 2013, the Ninja ZX-14R is also available with optional ABS brakes, for additional rider confidence on mixed or slippery surfaces.

Of course, with this much top-shelf performance, you also have to look good. Dynamic styling has been a Kawasaki hallmark since the days of H1s, H2s and Z-1s, so it’s only fitting that the pinnacle of a long line of sportbikes looks the part. From tip-to-tail, the ZX-14R’s bodywork honors the imposing, angular and flowing shapes that have made recent Ninjas some of the most attractive sportbikes in existence. The nose is especially imposing, with a highly aggressive nose fitted with a quad-headlight assembly and a large ram-air duct to stuff cool atmosphere into the intake system. The traditional 4-fin theme along the fairing’s sides has a pronounced 3D design, while great effort was expended to hide hooks and fasteners as much as possible. The bike’s tail section is especially well-sculpted, with faired-in turn signals and a cool rear seat cowl – standard on all U.S.-spec models – boosting aesthetic performance.

The fairing package offers functional benefits as well as aesthetic ones. The seat, for instance, offers excellent thigh support and helps make it easy for vertically challenged riders to reach the ground. The bodywork’s venting system effectively extracts heated air from the engine bay and away from the rider and passenger.

Instruments and controls are fully up to the latest standards, with a multi-function switch on the left handlebar that handles all system functions; you can toggle the LCD screen using the upper/lower buttons, and easily scroll through fuel consumption, remaining range, battery voltage, external temperature, traction control, etc., choosing and adjusting functions using the ‘select’ button in the center of the toggle switch. There’s even an “eco” indicator on the LCD screen that lets riders know when they’re getting maximum economy and fuel mileage.

The end result of all this technology and all these features is a dominating open-class ride – a supremely smooth, powerful and refined sporting motorcycle that’ll gladly go anywhere there’s asphalt and do it with an uncanny level of competence. High-aggression Sunday-morning rides? No worries. Two-up along the coast for the weekend? Easy. Commuting to and from work? Simple. Weekend bracket racing at the local dragstrip? Cake.

See? It’s difficult to compete with an open-classer this good at so many things. It’s a fact our competition knows all too well.

2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R Features and Benefits

1,441cc Four-cylinder Liquid-cooled DOHC Engine
- Long-stroke design, ported cylinder heads, lightweight forged pistons, and aggressive camshaft profiles provide more torque and power throughout the rev range than any other production sportbike
- Piston jet system sprays a continuous stream of cooling lubrication to the underside of each piston for cooler running temperatures, more consistent power output and excellent long-term durability
- Strong cam chain and tensioning system offers excellent high-rpm durability
- Thick 40mm crankshaft main journals contribute to long-term engine durability
- Surface and heat treatments allow the transmission gears to better harness the engine's prodigious power output
- Chrome composite-plated aluminum cylinder bores are lightweight, durable, and effectively transfer heat away from the combustion chamber and piston for maximum durability at high power outputs
- Mechanical noise is kept to a minimum via special piston profiles and a urethane insulation sheet on the inside of the magnesium chain cover

High-flow Exhaust System
- Header assembly has tapered-diameter pipes for optimal engine response and power output
- The internal construction of the dual mufflers minimizes the impact of noise and emissions regulations, while maintaining impressive top-end power
- Airflow directed into the exhaust by the large secondary air ports in the cylinder head and head cover, plus a third honeycomb catalyzer in the exhaust collector, help meet strict Euro III emissions standards

Gear-driven Dual Engine Balancers
- Revised balance weights keep the newly dimensioned engine (more stroke) in ideal balance, resulting in improved comfort for riders and passengers
- Already in perfect primary balance, the ZX-14R's engine design features dual secondary balancers that virtually eliminate unwanted vibrations for extremely smooth operation and reduced rider fatigue

Ram Air Induction
- Central ram air duct in the newly shaped fairing draws cooler, higher-pressure air from the face of the fairing and efficiently guides it through the larger and more efficient air cleaner and into the reworked engine for maximum power output

Digital Fuel Injection
- DFI® throttle body assembly features individual 44mm throttle bodies fitted with an idle speed control and sub-throttle valves controlled by the 32-bit ECU. They provide precise response, smooth performance, automatic idle speed adjustment, and help the bike meet strict Euro III emissions requirements
- High performance intake tract porting optimizes flow characteristics
- Fuel injectors deliver lateral spray at a 20-degree angle to disperse the finely atomized (75-micron droplet size) fuel over a wide area

Dual-Mode Digital Ignition
- Rider selectable High & Low maps offer a choice between full power and approximately 50 percent power output to help suit changing conditions
- Digital Timing Advance enhances low- and mid-range power
- Individual spark plug-mounted ignition coils fire each of the four spark plugs independently to achieve the optimum timing for that cylinder
- ECU includes an idle speed control system for easier starting and warm-up

KTRC Traction Control
- KTRC traction-control system features three different selectable modes to suit rider preference and different riding conditions
- Modes are selected by a handy switch assembly on the left handlebar
- Modes are indicated on the LCD cockpit display

Back-Torque Limiting "Slipper" Clutch
- Back-torque limiting "slipper" clutch assembly helps control rear-wheel torque effects while downshifting or coasting to minimize wheel hop, chatter and reduce rider stress
- Radial-pump hydraulic clutch master cylinder offers smooth and precise engagement and optimal feel at the lever

Petal-type Discs with Radial-mount Calipers and Optional ABS
- ABS brakes offer excellent performance and enhanced confidence in adverse conditions
- Compact, lightweight ABS unit is highly effective without weighing the bike down
- Petal-type brake rotors provide better cooling and enhanced warp resistance than traditional discs
- Radial mounted four-piston front brake calipers offer greater rigidity than traditional caliper mounting to improve brake feel
- A separate brake pad is used for each piston. Individual pads provide increased cooling efficiency and can absorb more heat without deforming so they maintain a consistent brake feel longer
- Radial-pump front brake master cylinder provides excellent lever feel and feedback

Monocoque Aluminum Frame
- Lightweight monocoque frame is a hollow aluminum box that arches over the engine from the steering head to the swingarm pivot. It is narrow, strong, rigid and very light
- Many of the frame's cast aluminum sections - steering head and swingarm pivot areas - are produced via a die-casting process for weight savings
- Rigidly mounted engine is a stressed frame member, which increases the frame's torsional rigidity and saves weight vs. traditional designs
- Engine is positioned forward in the frame, with the long wheelbase and front/rear weight balance carefully designed to achieve high-speed stability and responsive handling
- Long swingarm design helps maximize forward drive and is gusseted to better cope with the engine's healthy torque output
- Massive head pipe casting contributes to frame rigidity
- Frame houses the air box and air filter in a space-saving design that simplifies air cleaner maintenance
- Battery is also housed within the frame and is easily accessible through an aluminum frame cover

Comfortable Sporting Suspension
- Inverted and multi-adjustable 43mm cartridge-type fork provides excellent wheel control and without sacrificing ride comfort
- Stepless damping adjustment allows ultra-precise tuning of fork reactions
- Fully adjustable bottom-link Uni-Trak® rear suspension is a compact design that offers premium control and feedback
- Linkage rates designed to allow linear suspension action and excellent wheel control
- Bottom-link design helps create a lower center of gravity, which makes the motorcycle more nimble

Aggressive Supersport Bodywork
- Monocoque frame is positioned over the engine so the sleek fairing is uninterrupted by protruding frame spars, adding to the extremely long and low styling
- Efficient fairing venting offers excellent engine-heat control to help maintain rider and passenger comfort on hot days
- Standard rear-seat cowl adds aesthetic appeal
- Both the front and rear turn signals are integrated into the bodywork and have clear lenses to enhance for a more modern appearance
- Quadruple projector beam headlights give the ZX™-14R a distinctive look. The outer lights contain position lamps and high beams, while the low beams are located in the center lamps
- Lightweight Denso radiator with dual fans and high-density cores provides maximum cooling efficiency

Full Instrumentation
- Black-faced dual analog speedometer and tachometer are easy to read
- Multi-function LCD digital display includes an odometer, two trip meters, fuel gauge, gear position indicator, clock, and many other variables, including traction-control and power mode information through its LCD indicator
- Programmable shift indicator lamp illuminates at pre-set rpm to signal rider upshift
- Programmable clutch engagement lamp illuminates at pre-set rpm to signal the rider to engage the clutch
- Controller Area Network (CAN) interface between the gauges uses fewer wires yet allows a greater volume of information, such as estimated fuel mileage, to be exchanged
