Monster evolution

The Monster 1100EVO further enhances the Monster family's defining concepts of functionality, style and sport with an evolution of the flagship model. Taking its name from the Desmodue Evoluzione engine, which delivers a Monster milestone 100hp, the 1100EVO rolls out with the latest generation exhaust system, comfort-enhanced ergonomics, Marzocchi front suspension and refined tail-end in addition to the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) of ABS brake system and 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO was the first ever Monster to be equipped with DTC.

Ducati's application of the "EVO" treatment now runs deep throughout the Ducati range and its introduction to the ever-improving Monster family was inevitable. It completes a stylish family of lifestyle motorcycles with high attention to user-friendly and safety-conscious detail, while ensuring the Monster's cult status as a design icon of hand-built, naked motorcycles remains as authentic as ever.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Motorcycle Photos 3The ultimate Monster

The Monster 1100EVO took everything great about the new generation Monster family and added an evolution of upgrades that took the Monster concept to the next level. The Desmodue Evoluzione engine is Ducati's first 2-valve motor to hit the 100hp mark and its super-smooth power delivery is sure to delight riders the world over. Add to that the latest generation, power-enhancing exhaust system with low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers that leave the tail-end looking sharp and minimalistic and the
introduction of DSP, consisting of the user-friendly, 4-level DTC that supports the ABS system in enhanced rider control, and it's plain to see that this really is an "evolution" model. But it doesn't end there.

Quality by design

Part of Ducati's approach to Quality improvement is to blend owner feed-back into the design process of new models, and the Monster 1100EVO is an iconic example. Ergonomics were totally revised with the a reshaped seat and bar-risers for the rider and a rear sub-frame ready to accept the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger, whose comfort is further enhanced with a low-slung, rerouted exhaust system. Add to these enhancements rubber-mounted rear indicators and a compact
number plate holder with LED lighting, and it is clear that Ducati listened to every last detail.

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's continuous pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles and with the EVO's dry weight at 169kg (373lb) it represents the lightest, most compact bike in its category.

The Monster 1100EVO is the result of constant evolution in design and technology. The powerful and breathtaking top-of-the-range model boasts attractive ergonomics and presents pure style and charisma, while preserving the essence of the original naked bike concept. The EVO design perfectly balances sports performance, stunning looks and safety-conscious riding pleasure and its seductive lines are the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the quintessential naked bike.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Motorcycle Photos 4Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)

The Monster 1100EVO was the first model to introduce the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), configured to enhance rider control on Ducati's lifestyle models. DSP consists of the ultra-dependable Brembo-Bosch ABS braking system and user-friendly 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). Both systems are supplied as original equipment and complement each other to provide a major contribution to safer motorcycling.

Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the DTC system offers a choice of four levels, each one programmed with an increasing level of interaction graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a lesser amount of intervention for more competent, sport-oriented riders. When the level is selected and DTC activated, the level is displayed on the instrumentation.

Front and rear wheel sensors then compare speed differential to sense when rear traction is being broken (wheel-spin) and DTC decides the best combination of two different types of instant electronic adjustment, calculated with data supplied from multiple sources. The first 'soft' stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that makes instant electronic adjustment to the ignition timing, administering varying amounts of ignition retardation to reduce the engine's torque.

If the DTC software detects that the first 'soft' stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheelspin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and, in addition, instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of constantly increasing injection cuts until, if necessary, full injection cut. During all stages of interaction, the two warning lights - normally used to signify the over-rev limiter - illuminate to indicate that DTC is being applied. As soon as the system recognises the gradual return of equal wheel speeds, it incrementally re-establishes normal power delivery. This seamless interaction is key to the super-smooth operation of the system and represents a considerable increase in performance safety during mid-corner acceleration.

The Brembo-Bosch ABS developed by Ducati combines with top quality brake system components to deliver outstanding performance and confident control. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock.

The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.

The Desmodue 1100 Evoluzione

The lightweight, L-Twin stands at the pinnacle of more than three decades of Desmo air-cooled development and its torquey power delivery has excited riders worldwide. Its latest evolution combined with the Monster's airbox capacity and latest exhaust configuration marks a milestone for Ducati's 2-valve engine as the first to reach 100hp.

The 1100cc Desmodue Evoluzione power unit continues to use a bore and stroke of 98 x 71.5mm, but its long list of refinements have boosted its power to 100hp (73.5kW) at 7500rpm with 76lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque at 6000rpm giving it smooth power delivery from city-like low rpm to exhilarating open road performance at redline.

The 1100's crankcases are vacuum cast using Vacural® technology, a process that achieves significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength. In addition to the magnesium alternator cover, the 1100 has a lightweight crankshaft assembly, using an 848-style Superbike flywheel and weight-saving rare-earth magnets for the generator assembly.

Power gains came not only from the crankshaft assembly, but also from an evolution of the top-end of the Desmodue power unit. The cylinder head, which introduced enhanced lubrication and cooling performance, also has a special inlet port shape for optimum flow and a combustion chamber shaped for improved burn efficiency. This improved efficiency included an 11.3:1 compression ration and the change to a single spark per cylinder ignition now managed by high-speed Siemens electronics.

Ensuring a sufficient feed and maximum volumetric efficiency to the high compression set-up are equally high valve lift values, safely enabled by Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and
radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

The Monster 1100EVO uses a slipper-clutch specially designed for the "wet" clutches of larger capacity engines. It features an oil bath system with 'slipper' function and super-light feel at the lever. Its design uses a progressive self-servo mechanism that presses the plates together when under drive from the engine, enabling the reduction of the clutch spring rates. This results in a much lighter clutch lever at the handlebar, ideal in traffic or long journeys. When the drive force is reversed (over-run), the same mechanism reduces the pressure on the clutch plates, enabling them to provide a race-like 'slipper' action which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and provides a much smoother feeling when closing the throttle or down-shifting under normal riding conditions. An additional cush-drive damper mechanism also smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic. The clutch and alternator covers are finished in a sophisticated looking carbon grey.

EVO exhaust

The latest generation exhaust system follows a revised 2-1-2 routing to ensure the EVO's power-enhancing and efficient power delivery and dedicates a lambda probe to each header to ensure precise fueling. While the stylish cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers carry catalytic converters to provide Euro 3 conformity, an electronically controlled mid-section valve optimises exhaust pressures throughout the rev-range. The revised positioning of the aluminium silencers leaves the rear-end of the Monster looking sharp and minimalistic and ensures uncompromised passenger comfort.

1100 chassis

Exceptional handling, combined with 75.9lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque from the Desmo engine, results in a pure, adrenalin-filled ride and at just 169kg (373lb), the Monster 1100EVO is the lightest bike in its class. The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the single-sided swingarm and aluminium footrest hangers, which are rider and passenger separated. The passenger footpeg hangers are designed to attach directly to the rear sub-frame, which also accepts the passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The footpegs and grab-rail kit provide increased passenger riding comfort and further enhance the EVO's stylish lines.

Fully adjustable 43mm Marzocchi forks and Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit, with adjustable spring pre-load and return damping, offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide the perfect 'feel'. The steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, which achieves progressive characteristics, enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, and eliminates the weight of any rocker-arm mechanism.

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster 1100EVO a "pure sports" look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is made in chill-cast aluminium, achieving optimum mechanical characteristics while reducing final weight for improved handling.

Stylish and lightweight aluminium alloy 10-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility and are fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre at the front and a 180/55ZR at the rear, both Pirelli Diablo Rosso II. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability. The sports character of the bike is further accentuated by aluminium tapered handlebars.

The power of the Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The impressive Brembo system features radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. As an integral component of the Ducati Safety Pack, ABS comes as standard equipment on the Monster 1100EVO.

Less is Monster

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, 'less-is-more' also means 'less-is-Monster'. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.

Monster Story

In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati's creation awed the crowds and the world's media of that year's Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche - dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions. The Monster's radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery... The Monster is characterised by a long and successful history, by its introduction during the years of numerous cylinders and uncountable colour options, but above all by a constant technological evolution that this year brings us to the birth of the last version: the Monster 1100EVO, "The Ultimate Monster".

Minimum weight, maximum fun

The Monster 1100EVO offers a greater enhanced driving pleasure. The exceptional handling comes from a further reduced weight (169 kg dry weight), combined with the new 100 hp engine Desmodue Evoluzione, the most powerful 2-valve Ducati ever. Every single component has been created to satisfy a Ducati rider’s needs and provide unrivalled agility and handling. That is why Ducati engineers, designers and testers have aimed for the best possible set-up and the Monster is able to ensure the best handling of all naked bikes.

Engine

Vacural® crankcases

The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100EVO features a crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models.
This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a weight reduction of the crankcase.

Power & torque curves

The Monster 1100EVO delivers 100CV (73,5kW) @ 7500rpm and 10,5kgm (103Nm) @ 6000rpm Compared with the previous Monster 1100, the new engine data performance ensures a more exciting riding experience at high revs and a super-smoother power delivery thanks to a more linear torque curve.

Desmodue Evoluzione

The Monster 1100EVO is powered by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine which is the first two-valve Ducati to hit the 100 hp. Compared with the previous 1100 cc Twin cylinder air-cooled L Desmodromic, this new engine gives an even greater adrenalin rush thanks to the superior power level at high revs while a more linear torque curve ensures a super-smoother power delivery. The 1100 cc Twin Desmodromic has been tuned in order to increase both volumetric and combustion efficiency. The inlet ports and the combustion chamber shape have been redesigned, while the new camshafts have an extreme profile to provide an increased valve lift. The pistons are new too and feature an high compression profile. To ensure high standards of reliability the head cooling system has been revised with improved lubrication to enhance the cooling performance.

Wet clutch

The Monster 1100EVO features a new wet clutch which ensures quiet operation and long life. In addition, the progressive self-servo mechanism reduces the lever effort at the handlebar and makes the Monster even more practical in traffic. The Monster 1100EVO wet clutch works with a race-like ‘slipper’ system which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting, and compared with other wet clutch used so far by Ducati, features an additional cush-drive damper mechanism which smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic.

Chassis

Marzocchi forks

The 43mm upside down fully adjustable Marzocchi forks offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect ‘feel’. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is a perfect balance between handling and driving pleasure under all conditions.

Lightweight 10-spoke wheels

The Monster 1100EVO is equipped with lightweight aluminum alloy wheels with the new 10-spoke design. The new wheels reduce unsprung weight and contributes to increase the agility and, with their sporty look, to stress the superior performance. The front wheel (3,50 x 17) is equipped with a 120/70ZR tire, the rear (5,50 x 17) with a 180/55ZR tire. The result is a light steering, reliable and sincere in their responses at all speeds, giving the vehicle exceptional stability.

Single-sided swingarm

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.

Sachs rear suspension

TThe Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit offers adjustable spring pre-load and return damping.
Using the proven ‘cantilever' system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism. The suspension set-up developed by the Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Monster Trellis

An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.

Ergonomics

With its slim waist and wide handlebars, the new Monster is the ideal bike for any riding style, in the midst of city traffic and in the winding curves. With a total steering angle of 64 degrees, an extremely intuitive and ergonomic handle position, a tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank, the Monster offers the rider a comfortable and safe control of the vehicle at all times. The Monster 1100EVO further improves comfort quality with a comfort-enhancing new seat embellished with red stitching and 20 mm higher bar-risers. The Monster 1100EVO also features a rear sub-frame ready to support the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Lightweight construction

The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more ‘pared down’ than their predecessors. The Monster 1100EVO goes further. The weight saving solutions used by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine construction, such as the alternator cover made in magnesium and the flywheel lightened of the Ducati 848EVO, in combination with a lighter exhaust, reduce to 169kg the total dry weight (-2kg compared to the Monster 1100).

Brembo brakes

The power and charisma of the new Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The vigorous Brembo system is the direct result of Ducati Corse racing experience, featuring radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320 mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. Ducati has further improved this powerful braking system, adding as standard content the ABS system which allows the best braking under any riding situation.

Equipment

Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)

In developing the Monster 1100EVO attention has been paid not only to performance enhancement, but also in ensuring both rider and passenger a high level of safety in all driving conditions. This second goal has been achieved by equipping the Ducati Monster 1100EVO with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which comes as standard along with the ABS system and the famous Ducati Traction Control (DTC). This is the first time it has been available on a Monster.

Signed by Diesel

Diesel signs the bike with its label and logo: the Diesel label used for denim clothes is stitched on the right side of the genuine leather upholstered seat, while the new Aluminum made air intakes are laser-engraved with the unmistakable "Mohican" logo.

DTC

The Monster 1100EVO is the first two valve engine model to be equipped with the state of the art Ducati Traction Control system (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO DTC system uses the same software logic developed and used by Ducati Corse for their winning bikes in MotoGP and Superbike Championships. The system offers a choice of four profiles, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance and, therefore, much less intervention for highly competent riders. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) which includes DTC + ABS.

Leather seat

The Monster Diesel is equipped with a genuine leather upholstered seat featuring horizontal ribs; standard outfit includes a passenger seat cover with a special design that contributes, together with other aesthetic interventions, to a "military-inspired" look; at cover front end is a customised metal plate with the progressive number and customer's personal data, enhancing the exclusive look of this version.

ABS

The ABS system provides a major contribution towards active safety as it's designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under panic braking or when braking in low grip conditions. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) and includes DTC + ABS.

Empowering Controls

The Monster 1100EVO features radial pumps with adjustable levers on beautifully shaped aluminium tapered handlebars.

DDA ready

The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Exhaust system

The Monster 1100EVO features a completely revised 2-1-2 routing exhaust system with two aggressive low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers placed on the right side, which give off in fullness the famous sound of the Twin-cylinder Ducati engine. The new exhaust system, equipped with tow Lambda probes and an electronically controlled valve, is a crucial component in achieving the excellent torque and engine power, and a fundamental style element used by the Ducati designers to emphasize the superior performance of the new Monster 1100EVO.
On the Monster Diesel, the black tailpipes and double silencer matched with the newly designed heat shields taking inspiration from the military cartridge-belts lend the exhaust system a more threatening look, making it the stylish item at the heart of this new version.

LED taillight

An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight-saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LED are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.
For the Monster 1100EVO, even the license plate light uses LED technology.

Headlight

The triple-parabola headlight on the Monster utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide an incredibly compact lighting package. In spite of its compact size, the headlight throws a broad and deep beam to provide excellent visibility and make night riding safer. Viewed from the side, its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.

Instrumentation

Visually simple digital instrumentation provides an array of data on command or, at a glance, just speed and revs. Information available at your fingertip include: scheduled maintenance warning, oil temperature, trip odometer, lap time, fuel reserve, warning light for low oil pressure, turn signals, over-rev warning, immobilizer and neutral warning light, ABS and DTC level.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Features and Benefits

MONSTER FAMILY FEATURES

Monster frame

An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of all Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and enables a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel.

The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster's stylish lines.

Monster ABS

The 2013 Monster family offers all 696 and 796 models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), while the 1100EVO and Monster Diesel has ABS fitted as standard equipment.

Monster instrumentation

Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature, ABS status (when applicable), DTC status (1100EVO and Monster Diesel only) and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

For the Monster 1100EVO and Monster Diesel, the display also doubles as a control panel for the 4-level Ducati Traction Control system included in the Ducati Safety Package (DSP), in addition to the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built "system-ready" for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy "battery maintainer" available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Monster Desmo

The incredible valve performances of the Desmodue engine are made possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

Monster quality

Having more experience with twin-cylinder high performance engines than any other manufacturer, the aircooled L-Twin remains central to Ducati's philosophy of motorcycling. This experience, plus constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques has enabled a distance between service intervals of 7,500 miles (12,000km) making Ducati ownership even more enjoyable.

2013 Yamaha YZF-R1 Review

The Back to Back Superbike Champion!

With back to back Superbike Championships and packed with MotoGP technology, the 2013 YZF-R1 is the most advanced bike ont he planet. And unlike anything else. That's because it's the world's first motorcycle with a crossplane crankshaft. Resulting in incredibly smooth power delivery and outrageous torque for a rush like never before. From the track to the street, the R1 truly is "the 1."

On the road or track the R1 rewards the rider like no other large-capacity supersport machine.

Power is about control and the R1 engine design, D-Modes, Traction Control and chassis design provide excellent controllability in a variety of conditions. The feeling of total confidence in your machine's abilities is one of the most important qualities that any bike can offer, and creates a special bond between the rider and machine, enabling the owner to exploit the enormous potential of this outstanding motorcycle.

2013 Yamaha YZF-R1 Key Features

Fuel Consumption ± 14kpl/40mpg (Imp)

Crossplane crank design with uneven firing order

7-position traction control

1The YZF-R1 benefits from MotoGP® technology – a seven-level Traction Control System. The system has been developed so the rider does not feel any unnatural or harsh intervention from the system. In addition, traction control can aid in reducing tire wear due to less wheel spin. Coupled with the three level D-Mode electronic throttle response control, riders have 21 different choices available to tailor the YZF-R1 to their riding preference.

This R1 keeps all the technological superiorities developed for its predecessor: YCC-T™ (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) is MotoGP® inspired fly-by-wire technology used to deliver instant throttle response. YCC-I® is Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake which is a variable intake system that broadens the spread of power. The fuel injection system provides optimum air/fuel mixtures for maximum power and smooth throttle response.

In keeping with this machine’s exceptional cornering ability and crisp handling, the aluminum frame has been designed to offer exceptional rigidity balance. The rear frame is lightweight Controlled-Fill die-cast magnesium, contributing the optimum mass
centralization. Suspension includes YHSJ (Yamaha Hydraulic Systems Japan) front forks which use one of the tricks developed for our winning MotoGP® bikes: independent damping. The left fork handles compression damping and the right side handles the
rebound damping. And the rear shock adopts bottom linkage for optimum suspension characteristics.

The sound on the YZF-R1 is unlike any other inlinefour cylinder production supersport. The precise and throaty pulse of the exhaust note will have riders enthused every time the throttle is opened.

2013 Yamaha YZF-R1 Features and Benefits

Engine:

• Ultra-lightweight, compact, 998cc, DOHC, 16-valve, liquid-cooled, 40 degree inclined, in-line four-cylinder engine with "crossplane" style crankshaft.

2• The key components of this cutting edge engine design are the "crossplane" crankshaft and an uneven firing order. Both of these features are used on Yamaha's championship winning M1 MotoGP racer. Please note … this is not a "big bang" engine. The R1 departs from the norm for in-line 4 cylinder engines and the 180 degree alignment of the crank pins (where the connecting rods attach to the crankshaft), and locates the center two rods at a 90 degree plane from the outer cylinders. This means instead of the crank pins aligned on the same plane (a straight line drawn through the center of the crankshaft), they align on 2 planes in the form of a cross ... or "crossplane". Working in conjunction with the crossplane crank is an uneven firing order. A traditional in-line 4 cylinder's firing order is normally 1,2,4,3 with a 180 degree interval. This R1 engine fires 1,3,2,4 cylinders and the firing intervals are uneven at 270 / 180/ 90 /180 degrees. What all this means to the rider is the most linear torque possible and amazing throttle control. This engine design allows a whole new level of rider - machine communication. One of the most important benefits is the outstanding cornering performance that increased engine control allows.

• The engineering goal for the R1 is controllability … not just an increase in horsepower. If that was the case, we could have simply increased the power output of the existing engine design resulting in a peaky, hard to use power band.

• The 4-valve cylinder head design features compact combustion chambers that utilize lightweight, trick, titanium valves on the intake side. The 4-valve design maximizes breathing efficiency and overall engine performance.

• The titanium intake valves are 31mm in diameter while the steel exhaust valves are 25mm in diameter. Lightweight yet super strong VX alloy valve springs control valve movement.

• Steep valve angles, 11.5 degrees on the intake side and 12.5 degrees on the exhaust produce a compact combustion chamber.

• The lightweight titanium intake valves reduce the reciprocating weight of the intake valves allowing for higher rpms without the concern of valve float. The use of lightweight "Ti" valves has allowed the engineers at Yamaha to use a 4-valve format. In the past, the use of 5 smaller valves allowed a higher rpm limit since each of the "smaller" valves was relatively light. The use of light weight titanium now means the engineers no longer have to use the 5-valve design to achieve the same high rpms.

3• Combustion chambers have been optimized for maximum engine performance. The compression ratio is 12.7:1.
• Compact automatic cam chain tensioner reduces both maintenance and mechanical engine noise.
• Short skirt, forged aluminium pistons offer light weight, fast throttle response and great reliability.
• Crossplane crankshaft features 36mm journals for increased strength, while the inertial moment of the crank has been increased by 20% versus the last generation R1.
• Connecting rods are carburized and use a nut less design. The lower end "cap" of the rod is made from the same piece of material as the upper portion and is cracked away in a process known as "fracture splitting". This process aids true big end roundness and greater precision in con rod dimensions.
• Ceramic composite cylinder "bores" are a "liner less" design with the ceramic coating applied directly on the aluminium block to ensure uniform heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced oil consumption, reduced friction and reduced weight.

• Closed deck cylinder design allows the cylinders to be spaced more closely together, allowing for a narrower engine.
• The cylinder block is a stand-alone piece (not integrated into the upper crank case). The benefit is reduced weight and a less tall engine which lowers the centre of gravity.
• A "coupling force balancer" is used to quell engine vibration for excellent rider comfort.
• Compact ACM (alternator) is mounted directly to the crankshaft. The compact ACM uses rare earth magnets which produce more power for a given size than conventional magnets, therefore reducing size and weight.

• Mikuni fuel injection system features twin injectors (one set of primary & one set of secondary injectors). This type of twin injector system is also used on our M1 MotoGP race bike and the R6. One set of injectors (primary) are located in the 45mm throttle bodies while the secondary injectors are located in the air box very near the computer controlled intake funnels. The primary injectors utilize 4 spray holes to maximize the fuel atomization process. The secondary injectors, located inside the air box, begin to function at mid rpms onwards to supply more fuel as required.

• The F.I. system features separate dual track TPS (throttle position sensor) and APS (accelerator position sensor) sensors
• An oxygen sensor is fitted into the exhaust collector making this a "closed loop" type FI system, which feeds back info to the ECU so adjustments can be constantly made to the fuel-air mixture for improved performance and reduced emissions.
• The benefits of fuel injection include excellent throttle response, great fuel economy, reduced emissions, stable idling and no choke to fuss with during start up.
• Maintenance-free transistor controlled ignition (TCI) provides a hot spark for sure starts and strong engine performance.
• The fuel injection's lightweight Electronic Control Unit (ECU) utilizes a powerful 32-bit processor for fast control of the injection process. The compact design also reduces weight.

4• YCC-I or Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake means the intake funnels / stacks vary in length (2 positions) depending on engine rpm. An electronic servo motor varies the funnel length from the tall position at low to mid rpms to the shorter setting for improved high rpm power. The transition rpm between the 2 lengths is approx. 9,400 rpms. The revolutionary YCC-I provides the best of both worlds …solid low rpm torque and power combined with an amazing high rpm rush. It takes only 0.3 of a second for the funnels to move from the tall to the short position.

• Yamaha's exclusive YCC-I electric-control servo motor-driven variable intake funnel system is a world's 1st on a production motorcycle and works in conjunction with Yamaha's fly-by-wire technology and FI System.

• Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at all rpms. The YCC-T is used to provide even more control of the intake air volume for smoother torque character. Similar to the R6 design, the YCC-T features 3 - ECU's inside the main ECU to control ignition, fuel injection and the YCC-T. This special ECU is capable of responding to changes at a speed of 1000th of a second.

• The rider can "mechanically close" the throttles by simply closing the throttle twist grip.

• 6-mode traction control system features an off mode as well (for a total of 7 positions). This MotoGP derived system limits or eliminates rear wheel slippage or slide based on the chosen mode. This system uses front and rear wheel sensors to detect slip and then adjusts / regulates via the ECU the throttle opening (YCC-T), fuel injection and ignition timing to control slip. The system is activated using a switch on the LHS switch gear. Each mode offers a different level of slip control.

• Long life Iridium twin electrode spark plugs are used.

• Compact close-ratio 6-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for maximum performance. The "stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch design stacks input/output shafts to create a low center of gravity and keeps overall engine size shorter front to back. As a result, the stacked design gives the engineers the freedom to place the engine in the "sweet spot" of the frame for optimum weight balance for awesome handling.

• The slipper or back limiter clutch assembly reduces rear wheel hop when making hard down shifts when under hard braking. Key benefit is reduced lap times and smoother control when riding aggressively during a race or track day.

• A multi plate clutch is used, utilizing coil springs and paper based fibre plates.

• "Ram Air" system "force feeds" outside air via dual ducts located beside the projector headlights into the intake system. As speed increases the air velocity in the system increases and pressurizes the air box. This "force fed" air helps the engine develop maximum power.

• Computer optimized large capacity air box maximizes performance. A viscous type, high flow air filter is utilized.

• 4 into 2 into 1 into 2 titanium exhaust system maximizes power output, reduces weight and improves aerodynamics. The dual under seat mufflers provide an aggressive sound. This system contains a 3-way honeycomb catalyzer and an oxygen sensor. The catalytic converter reduces harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions while the oxygen sensor provides feedback to the ECU to maintain optimum fuel/air mixture at all times.

• Dual shorty, large diameter triangle shaped mufflers are a "single expansion" type that create a throaty exhaust note and help emphasize engine character. New muffler end caps improve styling. The exhaust note is much different than on previous R1 models due to the crossplane crank and uneven firing order … it sounds very similar to Yamaha's M1 MotoGP race bike.

• Compact, high-efficiency curved radiator features dual ring-type fans for maximum cooling efficiency. This curved rad and twin fan design produces more airflow than conventional flat designs to maintain optimum engine temperatures for consistent power output.

• Large liquid-cooled oil cooler maintains stable lubricant temperatures for extended engine life. Convenient spin-on oil filter.
• Convenient clutch cover sight glass ensures easy oil level inspection.
• High performance direct ignition coils (ignition coil is built into the spark plug cap) reduce weight while iridium spark plugs and high-output magneto deliver increased spark energy.

• Yamaha D-Mode variable throttle control enables the rider to adjust the performance characteristics of the engine based on riding preferences or conditions. Standard mode emphasises the very linear throttle and torque feel of the engine. The A mode allows the rider to enjoy sportier engine performance in the low to mid rpms. While the B Mode reduces the power response for riding situations that require softer power characteristics. The switch mechanism is located on the RHS handle bar switch gear.

Chassis and Suspension:

• Aluminium Deltabox frame has been designed to offer an optimized rigidity balance to maximize handling performance. This frame is very rigid or stiff at the head pipe, engine mounts and swingarm pivot point. In other areas, material has been carefully removed to allow "tuned flex". Finished in black, this frame boasts a compact 1415mm (55.7") wheelbase. The swingarm pivot location has been optimized to minimize the chain tension effect under hard acceleration, providing more stable handling. The engine is a fully stressed chassis member to maximize handling. Stability, a key to great handling, is unsurpassed while the ability to hold a line under hard acceleration is excellent. This frame features a mix of gravity cast (head stock & front engine mounts & swingarm pivot area), CF (controlled filling) die cast (outer tank rails) and aluminium panels (inner tank rails). Each of these aluminium parts has different flex characteristics in order to provide the rigidity balance the engineers desired.

• Detachable magnesium CF die cast rear subframe reduces weight. The detachable design allows rear shock access and is less costly to repair if accidentally damaged.

• Extra-long, lightweight aluminium "truss-type" swingarm provides great torsional rigidity for class leading handling, agility and manoeuvrability. This lightweight swingarm is made up of cast aluminium and CF die cast parts. The distance between the swingarm pivot and the rear axle has been optimized (597 mm) for excellent "turn-in" abilities and rear wheel traction.

• This Deltabox chassis offers an incredible 56 degree lean angle.

• Fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork features independent left and right damping system. The compression damping is adjusted via the left fork leg, while rebound damping is adjusted on the right fork leg. This system simplifies the flow of oil through the fork and minimizes oil cavitation (aeration of the oil) for more stable suspension performance. Adjustments include 5-way spring preload, 25-way rebound and 25-way compression damping. Front wheel travel is 120mm (4.7"). The thickness of the inner fork tubes and the shape of the outer tubes have been optimized. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider weight and road /track conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance.

• MotoGP M1 inspired, gravity cast aluminum upper triple clamp reduces weight and improves styling.

• Bottom link Monocross rear suspension utilizes a fully adjustable piggyback-style rear shock. Adjustments include 16-way spring preload, 18-way rebound and 20-way slow speed compression damping and 4-way high speed compression damping. The bottom link design lowers the centre of gravity for excellent handling. This is a rising rate or progressive system. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match rider weight and road /track conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance. Rear wheel travel is 120mm (4.7").

• Radial mount 6-piston calipers squeeze fully floating 310mm dual front rotors. The result is incredible braking performance with excellent control and lever feedback.
• Brembo radial pump master cylinder with 16mm piston is a direct GP race innovation. The lever is adjustable for various hand sizes.
• Single piston slide-type Nissin rear caliper squeezes a lightweight 220mm rotor.
• Rugged yet lightweight 5-spoke mag wheels front and rear. The wheels utilize hollow "spokes" to reduce unsprung weight for superior handling. Front rim size is a MT3.50 x 17 while the rear is MT6.00 x17.
• Premium sport radial tires front and rear.
• 18 litre fuel tank provides excellent knee grip for hard braking and great rider manoeuvrability. The elongated shape helps to centralize mass and reduces the variance in riding feel as the fuel load (weight) changes.
• Aggressive front fairing offers excellent aerodynamics and features LED position lights.

• Race inspired lightweight instrumentation includes an analog tach plus digital speedo, dual tripmeters, clock, coolant temperature and fuel trip meter. This console also features adjustable back lighting, adjustable shift light and a low fuel warning light. Other key features include a gear position indicator, traction control indicator, engine mode indicator integrated stop watch, lap timer with split time mode and an air intake temperature display. The lap timer is controlled by the starter switch button for added convenience and ease of use.

• LED taillight reduces weight and power consumption while providing a brilliant eye catching light. The lens is white while the LEDs are red.

Additional Features:

• Adjustable footrests can be raised 15mm upward and 3mm backward if desired.
• Lightweight aluminum rider footrests.

• Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of "ride away" theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the key (or a thief's screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool") the bike will not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position. If the system does not recognize the coded chip in the ignition key, it will not allow the ignition system, fuel pump or starter motor to function.

• Windshield features a "screw less" design for a cleaner, more trick appearance.
• Slim design rear tail section.
• Extensive use of hollow bolts and lightweight fasteners help trim overall weight.
• Heavy-duty 50 series "O" ring drive chain.
• New design 17 tooth drive sprocket reduces chain noise.
• Low maintenance, lightweight, sealed battery.
• Convenient fold out under seat bungee cord fastening straps.

The YZF-R1 offers a significant level of power and performance. It is not intended for novice or inexperienced riders.

With a thoroughly refined engine, it develops exceptional power from idle to redline and incredibly crisp throttle response. It also features the innovative new Separate Function front Fork (SFF) from Showa. The new front suspension works with an updated twin-spar aluminum frame engineered for an optimum balance between rigidity and high-speed traction, providing you with incredibly precise handling and smooth performance on the toughest tracks. The new RM-Z450 - it puts championship-winner performance in your control to reach the top of the podium!

2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 Features and Benefits

Engine Design Concept
For race-winning performance, a motocrosser’s engine needs to be durable, efficient and powerful. To win championships, that engine needs the powerful engineering heritage that comes from Suzuki. The RM-Z450 features a fuel-injected engine powered by Suzuki's advanced technology. Suzuki’s fuel-injection expertise has delivered national and world championships in Superbike racing as well as in Motocross and Supercross . High-performance heritage like this serves as the platform for the technological improvements Suzuki built into the 2013 RM-Z450 resulting increased acceleration, faster throttle response, and broader mid-range power and torque. That means motorcycles that are more competitive and more practical performers to win those bar-to-bar battles.

2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 Motorcycle Photos 1Piston
A motocross bike's single piston must endure an explosive environment, and needs to perform with efficiency and durability. Based on racing data and on-track experience, Suzuki redesigned the piston, piston pin and connecting rod of the RM-Z450 . With a new shape – designed through Finite Element Method ( FEM ) analysis used in factory racing – the new piston is 13% lighter than in the previous model while retaining rigidity. The reshaped connecting rod is lighter and the piston pin has been made shorter and more durable. As a result, the RM-Z450 delivers faster throttle response, plus increased bottom to mid-range power and torque. These traits deliver the efficient durability and powerful performance racers need to win.

Piston pin
To reduce friction loss and increase performance, Suzuki coated the RM-Z450’s piston pin with Diamond-Like Carbon ( DLC ) coating. Suzuki uses similar DLC coatings in its suspension of the Hayabusa , the legendary Sportbike . This surface finish helps reduce friction, and increase durability. Add this feature to the piston pin’s shorter and lighter design, and the result is noticeably stronger throttle response.

Exhaust
Increasing the exhaust pipe’s length by 50mm better tunes the engine to deliver stronger low-end and mid-range power output. A new silencer has redesigned construction with inner pipes that meet FIM-enforced sound control regulations without jeopardizing engine power output.

Transmission & Shift Cam
RM-Z racers will enjoy smoother and more precise shifting on the 2013 models with the RM-Z450’s updates for more precise shifting performance. Suzuki changed the shape of the shift cam to deliver that shifting precision plus smoother shift feel.

2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 Motorcycle Photos 4Electrical
Suzuki updated the electronics that help control the battery-less fuel-injection system on the RM-Z450. The new ECM now has a higher-performance processor for more powerful engine management. This component upgrade increases response all the way from the rider’s throttle input to the fuel delivery through the multiple hole fuel injector. And since the ECMs are now waterproof, they resist damage from water and mud, and that helps keep racers at the front of the pack. The electrical systems also get a new magneto with increased power-generating performance for easier starting. And with revised settings in the ignition coil, the RM-Z450 delivers strong roll-on power and increased throttle response.

Camshafts
The RM-Z450’s intake cam timing and lift are revised, giving the bike’s power a more linear output for better control.

Chassis Design Concept
Racers know that, in and out of a corner, precision cornering and race-track stability has always been a prime feature of Suzuki’s motocross bikes. But that doesn’t mean engineers left “good enough” alone. For 2013, the team focused on making the RM-Z450 even more maneuverable, while retaining the bike’s top-notch performance tracking and race-speed stability. With enhanced engine performance as well as refined handling control, the RM-Z450 will continue to be the choice of champions, and of those soon-to-become champions.

Frame
To ensure the frame’s rigidity is well balanced, engineers reviewed and refined the shape and construction of the frame and the seat rail. The result is an ideal balance of nimble handling for technical sections and straight-line stability for high-speed sections.

Front Fork
The RM-Z450 now use the new Showa Separate Function front Fork (SFF). The SFF works by separating the damper in left leg from the spring housed in the right leg. Dividing the fork’s functions allows for lighter overall construction with reduced friction, resulting in improved damping performance and ride control. The forks’ inner tubes are now 48mm in diameter; the larger size gives higher stability. Spring pre-load is adjustable, by a gold-anodized adjuster, allowing a wider range of adjustment settings overall.

Rear Suspension
To maintain the RM-Z’s renowned handling performance, the rear suspension features setting changes and adjustments which best compliment the increased engine performance and front fork changes. Overall, the design allows enhanced suspension performance for a wider variety of riders.

2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 Key Features

2013 Suzuki RM-Z450 Motorcycle Photos 3In 2011 Suzuki introduced the coupler system to the RM-Z450. The 2013 RM-Z450 uses this innovative design, which consists of three couplers that allow you to quickly adjust the fuel setting to suit riding conditions. One coupler contains the stock settings, a second is for a richer fuel setting than the stock setting and the third is for a leaner setting.

All-new Showa Separate Function front Fork (SFF) separates spring and damping functions. The right leg holds the spring, while the left leg incorporates the cartridge assembly to manage damping. The SFF design reduces friction, increased absorption performance and is lighter weight resulting in remarkably smooth performance over a variety of track conditions.

Redesigned 5-speed transmission with reshaped shift cam, stopper spring and drive shaft results in more solid shift feel, enabling more precise gear shift operation.

Riders can now track engine-operating time and better manage maintenance intervals using the optional FI indicator (Part no. 36380-28H00).

Engine Features

Compact and lightweight 4-stroke, 449cc, fuel-injected, DOHC engine provides extraordinary torque for awesome acceleration from idle to redline, with incredible high-rpm power.

The newly designed piston, piston pin and connecting rod are developed with use of Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. The new piston is 13 percent lighter without any compromise to strength and rigidity.

The new piston pin has Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) surface treatment for less friction and increased durability. The new design reduces mechanical loss and helps the engine produce quicker throttle response.

Intake cam timing and amount of lift has been modified for smoother power delivery and control.

Aluminum cylinder, with Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) coating, is designed for durability, light weight and efficient heat transfer.

An advanced battery-less fuel-injection (FI) system features a 12-hole fuel injector and progressive throttle linkage for instant throttle response.

A new ECM with higher processing performance and a new high power ignition coil optimize combustion efficiency for increased roll-on performance.

Redesigned muffler internal parts, bottom-to-mid range power and torque are increased, resulting in improved performance without losing top end. The new muffler body now uses conventional bolts in end cap instead of rivets to simplify the replacement of the glass wool packing in the muffler.

Transmission Features

Redesigned 5-speed transmission with reshaped shift cam, stopper spring and drive shaft results in more solid shift feel, enabling more precise gear shift operation.
